Unit 1: Understanding the Principles & Practices of Assessment (4236)

Tuesday 21st February 2012, Birmingham

The aim of this unit is to assess the learning and development practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of assessment. ‘Practitioner’ means anyone with a learning and development responsibility as the whole or as a part of their role.

This unit is part of:

  • A nationally recognised assessment qualification
  • Progression onto the Level 3 Award in Assessing Occupational Competence in the Work Environment, Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement and Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

Level 3 Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment  - 3 credits

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the assessor and internal quality assessor within your own organisation and your organisation’s work sector
  • Identify Lead Bodies and Sector Skills Councils to contextualise the assessment according to the requirements for your sector
  • Identify the use of the different methods of assessment
  • Understand best practice in relation to assessment
  • Take steps to create a robust assessment plan
  • Work with the learner to holistically assess naturally occurring evidence across a range of units
  • Compare different assessment methods in different contexts
  • Justify the different types of assessment records
  • Discuss topics in relation to legal issues, policies and procedures relevant to assessment such as confidentiality, health & safety, welfare and inclusive practice
     

 

How to achieve certification

You will need to provide a written piece of summative assignment work which will be stored on the NTRL virtual learning environment (Moodle) which will be assessed, internally verified and moderated by our awarding organisation, OCR

Upon successful completion and moderation of your assignment work, you will receive your Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

Continuous Professional Development

You may wish to attend this course as part of your commitment to Continuous Professional Development.  You will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course but you will not be able to say that you are accredited in this qualification.

NTRL Tutors

The NTRL tutors have extensive years experience working in the fields of Education, Training and Development. 

They are certified to PGCE or equivalent for FE Sector, and are Assessors, Verifiers or Moderators for various Awarding Bodies in: Skills for Life, PTLLS, CTLLS & DTLLS, and relevant Functional Skills.

 

Who is the course designed for?
This course is relevant to assessment practitioners who may be new to the sector, and wish to follow the progression route to full certified Assessor and Internal Quality Assurance status.

What is required to achieve this qualification?
A mandatory assignment is required by the awarding organisations to complete this qualification. The assignment work is stored in the NTRL virtual learning environment (Moodle) and is designed to test the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the whole qualification.

Mapping qualifications to PTLLS/CTLLS/DTLLS?
The Level 3 Unit 1: Understanding the Principles & Practices of Assessment unit may ‘cross-map’ to the PTLLS and CTLLS unit for assessment subject to the quality of the assignment work produced.  NTRL are accredited by Ascentis and OCR to deliver PTLLS, CTLLS and DTLLS teacher/training qualifications.

Internal Workshops

NTRL training programmes are highly participative with a blend of presentation, group exercises and debate.  A comprehensive courseware folder and handouts are provided including checklists, sample documents and reference lists for internet pages for further reading and research.

We also provide additional support via online learning software.

Certification will be conferred to participants by OCR, the awarding body, upon the successful completion of the assignment work

Delegate numbers are limited to 15 per workshop.

This enables interaction and involvement with those participants present.

The Unit 1: Understanding the Principles & Practices of Assessment course can be hosted within your organisation for a group of your staff and specifically aligned to their development needs.

 

Next Steps

 
The next stage of the progression route is to achieve Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Competence by attending Unit 2: Assess Occupational in the Work Environment and/or Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge & Understanding.
