Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer in the QCF: Practice & Funding Implications - 1 Day Training Course

Overview

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer are not the same. Recognition of Prior Learning in the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF) is similar to Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) in the National Qualification Framework (NQF). RPL is defined by Ofqual as “the process undertaken on behalf of the learner to identify and recognise relevant learning, experience, knowledge or competences that he or she may have already and which contribute to the qualification or unit they plan to undertake”. RPL is not just applicable to whole units and there is no time limit on the evidence judged, as the assessor determines validity and authenticity in the usual way.

Credit Transfer works at unit level only and allows units which the learner has already to be transferred into a subsequent qualification. The unit and the credits it represents are transferred into the new qualification. No assessment is involved.

All centres offering QCF qualifications must offer RPL and Credit Transfer. Practitioners need to know how to use RPL from initial assessment through to learner achievement. Credit Transfer is equally important and for funded programmes means that financial claims must be adjusted to ensure funding for previously achieved units is not claimed again.
This event is designed to explain the difference between RPL and Credit Transfer and show delegates how to implement both.

Objectives

Following the workshop delegates will be able to:

  • Explain key QCF terms and the implications these have upon their practice
  • Explain the difference between Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning and when each applies
  • Describe how RPL fits within the initial advice and guidance learners must have
  • Carry out assessment for RPL purposes
  • Grasp the implications of Credit Transfer and RPL on the time it takes a learner to achieve a qualification and the Guided Learning Hours

Content

The Workshop will cover the following topics:

Understanding assessment in the QCF

  • How the structure and regulation impact upon assessment practice

The standards to which assessors and IQAs must work

  • The difference between RPL and Credit Transfer
  • How both affect learner time and GLH
  • The funding implications for Credit Transfer
  • How RPL fits into the respective job roles; who should do what

Using RPL

  • Initial advice and guidance
  • Identifying previous learning, experience and competence
  • How to judge, make decisions and record previous learner achievements
  • Putting it all together

Individual and organisational development needs

  • Organisational and individual action points

Who Should Attend?

This event is aimed at anyone involved in recruitment, advice and guidance, assessment or quality assurance of learners. It would be particularly helpful for staff involved in delivering PTLLS and CTLLS as the assessor and IQA qualifications now form part of these so RPL and Credit Transfer are required.
