An Introduction to Project Management (WS6010)

Monday, 18th March 2013, Leeds City Centre

Introduction to Project Management - 1 Day Course

Overview

Project management skills are becoming more vital to organisations as greater emphasis is given to controlling costs, meeting delivery expectations and implementing change. The current economic climate means that project costs and timescales must not overrun whilst, at the same time, management resources may be thinner.

Whether you are a member of a project team, project manager, technical specialist, financial controller or a senior executive, many of the disciplines practiced within project management will be relevant to you, and having a clear understanding of how to apply them will give you an edge over the competition.

This one day course will give you a good understanding of professional project management as well as the tools and techniques you need to effectively deliver your first “project” successfully. It will also provide a level of understanding that will enable you to go on to further develop your project management skills at our later advanced tools and techniques workshop.

What Types of Project?

This workshop is not specific to particular types or contexts of project – the skills are generic. However, discussion and exercises will allow reference to different contexts to highlight the use of the techniques covered in a wide range of projects, such as:

  • Quality improvement
  • Change in production or service systems
  • Management and staff restructuring
  • Technological implementation
  • Development of standards and qualifications
  • Marketing and sales campaigns
  • European or UK Funded Social Project

Facilitator

86

Our facilitator is an experienced project and programme manager that has been involved in delivering public sector change programmes for over 10 years. She has a proven ability in leading complex projects in challenging political environments whilst leading teams of project professionals to deliver tangible business benefits.

The facilitator has successfully delivered projects ranging from £10,000 up to £8 million and has developed and implemented project management frameworks and processes to improve organisational performance.  She has been involved in delivering innovative programmes to the wider FE sector for the last 5 years and most recently led the programme of work to review the qualifications for teaching and learning professionals in the lifelong learning sector.

In 2007, she was appointed as project manager for the Business Interchange project, part of the Catalyst programme, which supported and encouraged 1600 tutors from over 500 organisations to undertake a work-based placement to update their vocational skills. This increased the confidence of tutors, built links between academia and business, improved investment in continuous professional development and improved staff morale.

Since April 2011, she has been establishing her own business offering services as a project consultant, facilitator and interim manager with a focus on dealing with change.
