Introduction to Government Funding (WS5767)
Tuesday, 21st August 2012, Manchester City Centre
With cuts and administrative changes, many organisations are finding it increasingly difficult to access traditional sources of funding (e.g. ESF). The UK government has a responsibility to replace the gap, with localised, regional and nationwide funding programmes. This one-day workshop explores the types of GRANT FUNDING available from Central & Local Government, the typical activities supported and advice on how to complete a successful proposal
The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness of the potential of UK Government Funding and the types of activity supported by the various Departments at both Central and Local level. Through a combination of presentations, group discussions and exercises, delegates will leave with a better knowledge of the key programmes, the outcomes they are seeking to achieve and how to find out about the latest initiatives. Using their experience as a bid writer, the facilitator will offer important tips on how to write a successful application.

Who Should Attend?
Specific examples of government programmes and the activities they support are restricted to either England-only or UK-wide initiatives. Whilst programmes that fall under the responsibility of the Scottish Parliament or Welsh Assembly will not be covered, application techniques will be relevant to organisations based across the UK as a whole.
Registered Charities, Community & Voluntary Sector Organisations, Colleges, Universities, Parent Teacher Associations, Sports Clubs & Governing Bodies, Arts Organisations, Faith Organisations, Non-Government Organisations, Local Authorities, Research Institutes, Council for Voluntary Services, Learning Partnerships, Business Links and Associations and training providers.
The facilitator is a Full Member of the Institute of Fundraising and has 15 years experience in the field of grant funding, with an extensive track record as a bid writer, grants assessor, project manager and independent evaluator. His recent successes include grants from English Heritage, the Fair Share Programme, Young People’s Fund, Reaching Communities Programme, Waste Recycling Environmental (WREN), Northern Rock Foundation and Volunteering England.
Working with a range of organisations to develop and implement successful fundraising strategies, his knowledge and experience cover European and UK Government grants programmes, National Lottery and Charitable Trusts and Foundations. He is also an experienced Project Manager, having managed projects both locally and internationally; he has written “Learning Together: A Guide to Transnational Partnerships” published by ECORYS Ltd (2007).
Currently, he works as an expert evaluator for the Lifelong Learning Programme, both in Brussels and in the UK. This includes assessing applications and evaluating projects funded by the Grundtvig (Adult Education), Leonardo da Vinci (Vocational Training) and Key Activity 3 (ICT) programmes. He also works as an assessor for the Youth In Action Programme on behalf of the British Council and has previously worked for the Youth Sector Development Fund (DCSF).
Previously, the facilitator was employed as External Funding Manager at a large general Further Education College. In just over four years, he increased the College’s regular income from grant sources to over £500,000 per annum and was responsible contractually managing of over 20 live projects. He was also responsible for the development of strategic partnerships, both locally and internationally, as well as promoting funding opportunities within the College.
