Effective Leadership (WS5544)

Thursday, 20th September 2012, Birmingham City Centre

Effective Leadership - 1 Day Course

Overview

Some points to consider:

  • Most people become leaders with limited or perhaps no training or advice - this is exactly what leadership is all about!
  • Leadership is not easy… though anyone might hold the helm when the sea is calm!
  • The final 20% of people’s effort at work is said to be discretionary
  • Some teams and organisations perform better than others
  • Levels of sickness or absence vary between teams and organisations
  • Change is constant: some leaders embrace change, others fight it
  • Obedience or commitment?  Success or failure?

Aims and Objective

Through exploring several practical leadership exercises, by the end of the workshop delegates will:

  • Have a clear idea of why we need leaders
  • Know what their primary duties as a leader are
  • Fully understand the roles and responsibilities of leaders
  • Have a very good understanding of their own leadership styles, its strengths and weaknesses
  • Have developed a programme to look at best ways to complete the task, improve and maintain their team and develop the individuals within their teams
  • Be thinking about their vision of their leadership
  • Have a clear idea of how to tackle essential matters such as motivation, discipline, communication etc.

Content

Exploring the implications, responsibilities, challenges and opportunities for leaders. Based on ‘best practice examples’ from a variety of environments and built around a succession of practical exercises and relevant discussion points, the course looks at a range of ideas:

What is Leadership all about?

  • A general overview of some of the crucial aspects of leadership.
  • Why do we need leaders?

Does leadership make a difference?

  • Are leaders born or made?  Is it mainly the qualities of leadership or activities of leadership that are important?
  • What is the first task of a leader?  Setting directions and how to proceed.
  • S.P.O.T. - Strategy, Policy, Objectives, Tactics
  • Leadership and change

The Three Areas of Leadership:

  • Technical, Administrative, People
  • People responsibilities include?
  • Management versus leadership
  • Manage the people not the task

Leadership approaches:

  • Situational, qualities, functional.  What do good leaders do?
  • The task, the team, the individual – Action Centred leadership by John Adair
  • Leadership exercise to demonstrate

Personal preferred leadership style?

  • Weaknesses and strengths of my preferred style. Personal action plan to minimise my weaknesses and maximise my potential

Motivation

  • What does the research say?
  • Giving a motivating purpose - pride in our work

Values and signals

  • What should be the values of leaders and how should we signal this?
  • Cabinet responsibility

See the programme for more details on workshop content.

Who Should Attend?

This programme is ideal for newly-appointed leaders; for those about to be appointed leaders; for those who want to ensure they’re 'doing it right'; and for those looking for ‘best practice’ of leadership activities and attitudes. Leadership is not primarily about charismatic characters but it is about what good leaders ‘DO’.
