Project Management for UK Funded Projects (3071)

Friday, 6th August 2010, Birmingham City Centre

Project Management for UK Funded Projects

Overview

Want to avoid giving back the money?  So, learn how to manage your project properly!  This one-day workshop will help you and your organisation to do just that.  Covering various UK funding sources, including Lottery, Government & Charitable Trusts, this event will help you to plan your project, work with partner organisations and explain how to set up effective monitoring systems that will satisfy the funding agencies requirements.

Taking an in depth look at selected UK funding programmes, this workshop is designed to familiarise delegates with typical contractual requirements and the issues that may develop in terms of: managing partners; managing meetings; measuring outcomes; disseminating results; evaluating progress; and completing reports.  The Workshop takes a practical approach by investigating how other projects have addressed these issues.

Content & Coverage

This workshop will provide delegates with an overview of the types of projects and activities that have been funded with grants from the Lottery, Government & Charitable Trusts.  By looking at example contracts issued by each type of funder, delegates will also gain a clearer understanding of what the agencies require in return for their money, which will help delegates plan effectively how to manage their own projects.

Using actual reporting documentation provided by the various funding agencies, delegates will also learn how to complete project returns and what the agencies are looking for in terms of evidence.  With practical project examples, the facilitator will introduce delegates to tried and tested approaches to measuring outcomes and progress, as well as sharing his own tips and experience in terms of dissemination and evaluation techniques.

The workshop will help prepare delegates looking to become first-time project managers, or with previous experience of projects which have gone wrong, resulting in funding agencies demanding a repayment of grant.  Using his own experience as a former manager of large transnational partnerships, the facilitator will offer important tips on how to prepare for a successful project.  Delegates will learn through a combination of formal presentations, informal discussions and group exercises designed to embed the key issues.

The workshop will be appropriate for staff with both management and monitoring responsibilities in project implementation and will cover:

* Project Delivery (typical activities, work plan development, funding regulations)

* Project Management (managing partners, managing resources, managing communication)

* Good Practice (monitoring activities, dissemination strategies, evaluation strategies)

* Project Administration (claiming funding, progress reporting, working with different funders)

Who Should Attend?

This event will be relevant to the following types of organisation, particularly personnel who are new to project management: Adult Education Providers, Voluntary & Community Sector Organisations, Social Enterprises, Local Authorities, Learning Partnerships, Employer Organisations, Business Links even Private Companies (as long as their intended project has charitable aims).

Facilitator

43

The Facilitator has almost 12 years experience in the field of grant funding including conducting funding searches, bid writing and project evaluation, as well as record keeping and project management.

He also regularly works as an assessor for the European Commission in Brussels. To date he has been invited as a panellist for the Socrates Grundtvig (Adult Education), Minerva (ICT Learning) and Joint Action programmes, both as an assessor of applications and interim & final reports. In addition he currently acts as an evaluator for two transnational projects, one co-ordinated by a Spanish NGO, the other by a rural development agency in Romania. As a result of these activities, he now has contacts in most countries of Central & Eastern Europe.

Previously, he was employed as External Funding Manager at Stockport College of Further & Higher Education. In this role he developed the college’s bidding activity from a position of one current project in 2000, to 20 live projects four years later and an annual income stream of £500,000 (from £35,000). During this time, he secured grants from the European Social Fund, National Lottery, Learning & Skills Council, European Commission and the Basic Skills Agency. He was also regularly invited to sit as a panellist by the Government Office North West and latterly by the Learning & Skills Council Greater Manchester.
