Corporate Governance & Equality Training (2985)
13th–30th July 2010, Birmingham, City Centre
Corporate Governance & Equality Training workshop
Overview
What does this typical statement really mean? - (Do you have such a statement?)
“ The Governors are responsible for:
- Ensuring that our equal opportunity policies are in place and capable of implementation
- Ensuring that we have a robust system of equality analysis in place and that effective/efficient action is being taken in respect of their outputs
- Supporting the Equality and Diversity Champion and ensuring they are aware of the statutory responsibilities in relation to all equality groups
- Receiving and responding to equality and diversity monitoring information on learners and staff "
The statement reinforces that Corporate Governance must be firmly linked to the Equality and Diversity Agenda for the governors and trustees of any part of the learning community. The range of corporate governance risks that governors face all have equality and diversity implications. These risks include management, financial, operational, environmental, compliance and reputational risks. If equality and diversity issues are insulated or vacuum packed away from these potential risks by the governing body there can be real problems!
Content
Our new training course makes a link between these corporate governance risks and the three key factors driving the modern equality and diversity agenda, namely:-
- The Legal Framework including the latest breaking political news from the Coalition Government
- The Business Case
- The Community or Demographic Considerations
We focus on the:-
- People reporting to you directly
- Staff your organisation employs – and those it wishes to employ
- People you serve – and those you seek to serve
- Stakeholders in your learning community
- Expectations of external scrutiny bodies like Ofsted when inspecting your corporate governance framework
Our course aims to:-
- Bring you up to speed on the key definitions and technical terms associated with equality and diversity
- Provide an update on the very latest breaking news including the new Equality Act 2010 and Ofsted’s new guidance on equalities/diversity issues for governors
- Give you a clear idea about your role within the implementation not only of equality policies but the growing number of public equality duties. This includes Equality Action Schemes and Impact Assessments
- The links between discrimination laws and those other statutes impacting on your duties such as Health and Safety ,Data Protection and Employment Law
- The key issues for you relating to the “burden of proof” and “vicarious liability”
- The key defences against litigation with checklists that will make you “reasonable”, “proportionate” and “practical”
- Highlight the critical convergences and divergences between “managing” equality and “governing it”
- Raise awareness about the economic, business and demographic considerations that impact upon equality and diversity delivery – as well as the law!
- Take you behind the scenes to illustrate what the modern external equality inspector is looking for today!
- Showcase best practice elsewhere in the learning community
- Signpost good sources of further external help and support
Who Should Attend?
- Governors, Potential Governors or Governor designates and/or any Trustee/Corporation Member/Non Executive Directors

Facilitator

This facilitator is one of the UK's top trainers and policy consultants in equality laws, diversity, cultural awareness and other complience issues. Prior to joining us,he was National Head of Training, Staff Development and Personnel for the Equal Opportunities Commission (1987 to 2000). Prior to this promotion, he was one of their County Court and Tribunal Caseworkers (1984 to 1987). He has served on Race Equality Councils, Disability Forums, the Gay Men's Business Association and currently chairs a Social Cohesion Committee.
When he is not working, he is a volunteer advocate which often involves him getting involved as a champion of those pursuing employment, welfare benefit, immigration and discrimination claims. This combination of professional and voluntary advocacy over the last 30 years means that he is one of the few UK trainers who has actually met with, worked with and represented a vast range of people across every single diversity strand, sometimes with multiple claims. He has therefore met the case studies which many other trainers are only ever able to refer to in detached and abstract terms!
