Staff Qualifications Conference

Tuesday, 8th June 2010 – Lakeside Centre, Birmingham

Conference Overview

Developing and Maintaining the Professional Status of Teachers and Trainers in the Lifelong Learning Sector

The Professionalising of Staff in Teaching, Training and other parts of the wider FE Sector is progressing well but what are the current issues and how are other staff roles affected by other new qualifications and requirements?

The 2007 changes to the regulations and qualifications in the broader FE sector still need some clarity; especially for staff outside of clear-cut teaching roles.  The routes to the new qualifications do not suit all staff or their organisations whilst, at the same time, new qualifications have arrived for some roles and new standards are being introduced for others. Additionally there are some professionally demanding activities in the development of practitioners which do not yet have appropriate standards or qualifications.

This one-day conference will invite the leading Government Department and associated organisations to clarify the current objectives, clear up some of the grey areas, highlight some new developments and provide a view of the planned trajectory.

  • What roles are covered and what levels of status are required?
  • How high-level training staff can develop professionally?
  • How well is CPD working both from compliance and development perspectives?
  • What is new on the block: qualifications, NOS, specific job roles?
  • How is inspection impacting on professional standards and development?
  • The progress of staff data collection
  • Funding issues for staff development

Underpinning the aim of Professionalising the Sector are the issues related to obtaining the
qualifications and maintaining professional development. In this part of the conference we
wil hear from some of those parties directly involved in the qualifications and CPD.

  • Awarding bodies
  • Providers of the qualifications
  • CETTS and University provision of the high level diplomas
  • FE institutions and WBL providers

The other part of the equation is to have some examples of good practice in formulating staff development strategies for different parts of the sector and their view on the impact of the changes, in particular: WBL providers, FE Colleges and ACL. Can professional staff development move an organisation forward in both quality and performance?
