WS1: Moving from Key Skills to Functional Skills
Workshop objectives:
- To provide a brief overview of the development of Functional Skills qualifications, how they have evolved to meet the needs of learners and providers (particularly employers), with a timeline for full implementation.
- To bust the 'myths' surrounding Functional Skills and to reassure the audience that the transition process can be effectively managed.
- To compare and contrast the delivery and assessment of Key Skills and Functional Skills qualifications
- To alert the audience to the wide-ranging awarding organisation offer.
- To provide an overview of the support and materials currently available

WS2: 'Bridging Qualifications’
Level 3 Award In English for Literacy and Language Teaching Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching
These qualifications will evidence achievement of the entry criteria for subject specific literacy, numeracy and ESOL teacher education programmes. They have been developed in response to sector demand for a flexible, supportive qualification. They are of particular value for those providers who wish to offer ‘bridging’ qualifications to support prospective trainees in developing the skills they need.
This workshop will provide delegates with the opportunity to discuss these qualifications in further detail,view specifications and learner profiles and explore ways in which a learner can progress.

WS3: Teaching numeracy through Functional Maths
Numeracy/maths is now very much a feature of the post-16 landscape and government policy is firmly focused on an ambition for all, to develop their maths skills at least to Level 2.
This workshop is aimed at teachers who are teaching maths skills through Functional Maths. We will consider teaching methods, the scope of the numeracy/ maths curriculum and how to address the deficit model of maths in learner engagement. The workshop will also focus on the teacher’s role within their organisation for promoting numeracy/maths both internally and externally.

WS4: Teaching literacy through Functional English
Literacy/English is now very much a feature of the post-16 landscape and government policy is firmly focused on an ambition for all, to develop their English skills at least to Level 2.
This workshop is designed to support teachers who are teaching English skills through functional English. We will consider teaching strategies, the revised Literacy/English curriculum, and how to meet the needs of the different learner cohorts. The workshop will also focus on the teacher’s role within their organisation for promoting Literacy/English within and across vocational areas.
